FAQs

What is a postpartum doula and what do they do?

Postpartum doulas play a vital role in providing families with comprehensive support during the transitional period after childbirth. While the day-to-day tasks may vary depending on each family's unique needs, doulas utilize an evidence-based approach acquired through specialized training and certifications. Here's an overview of the various ways a postpartum doula can offer assistance:

Emotional Support:

  • Offering a compassionate ear and emotional reassurance.

  • Assisting parents in processing their birth experience and addressing any associated emotions.

Practical Assistance:

  • Guiding parents in newborn care, including feeding, diapering, and soothing techniques.

  • Providing advice on establishing routines and managing sleep patterns.

Household Support:

  • Undertaking light housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and organized living environment.

  • Assisting with meal preparation or meal planning to alleviate parental stress.

Breastfeeding Support:

  • Offering guidance and support for breastfeeding, including assistance with latching, positioning, and overcoming common challenges.

Education and Information:

  • Providing valuable insights on newborn care, postpartum recovery, and infant development.

  • Supplying families with resources and referrals for additional support as needed.

Sibling and Family Integration:

  • Aiding in the adjustment of older siblings to the new family dynamic.

  • Facilitating family bonding activities and ensuring pets feel included.

Self-Care Guidance:

  • Encouraging parents to prioritize self-care and offering suggestions for relaxation techniques.

  • Providing access to resources for postpartum mental health and well-being.

Community Resources:

  • Connecting families with local support groups, classes, and community resources.

  • Furnishing information on postpartum support networks to bolster familial resilience and integration.

Through their multifaceted support services, postpartum doulas empower families to navigate the challenges of early parenthood with confidence, compassion, and resilience.

Is there anything a doula doesn’t do?

At Truly Postpartum, my primary focus is on providing holistic support to the entire family during the postpartum period. I do not assess the medical status of the mother or baby, but I'm always ready to make referrals if any concerns arise. I'm here to lend a hand with everyday household tasks, though I do not undertake heavy cleaning duties. Additionally, I do not offer nannying or babysitting services when in my doula role. However, I do have a Sibling Care package that can be added on to doula services or used independently. Reach out to learn more!
